Meeting on November 10th

Next meeting

The next AITEN meeting will take place on November 10th (Friday) – we will keep going with the preparation of the comedy night, and the video making project started with Amnesty Youth group. We especially need people with camera skills (and equipment!) to realize this plan and it will be an active session, trying out ideas and drawing up detailed plans. So please try to come – and if you can’t, let us know any other ways you might be able to help. Bringing more young people into AI is a very important priority. We hope we might get other schools involved – YIS and ISSH for starters perhaps.
We’ll continue our letter-writing activities to support prisoners of conscience and oppressed people all around the world.
Place: Amnesty international Japan Office, Kanda

Video project about to start !

Last meeting on September 13th, we met with Mariko, the AI Youth coordinator. Plans are afoot to work on making videos for young people together in both English and Japanese. The youth group has university and high school members and has some exciting plans for a youth camp in December on gender issues and a workshop tour by Chen Guangcheng, the blind Chinese civil rights activist who now lives in the USA. The Tokyo date is October 29 (Sun) and there will be a session on the 28th in Kamakura.
We finished the evening by writing letters about a young student imprisoned in Thailand for sharing an article about the King on his blog – and a US citizen facing the death penalty in Saudi Arabia despite lack of evidence.

At the next AITEN meeting – October 3rd (Tue) – we want to bring together all those who’d like to get involved in any way in the video making project.

March against the Conspiracy Law September 15th
Conspire for Freedom: A protest march on the new Conspiracy Law went from Hibiya Park to Ginza on Friday evening (15th). Amnesty International joined with Greenpeace & other groups. The Justice Ministry predicted at the outset that this law could affect NGOs working on human rights & the environment!! Many rights are likely to be eroded and there’s a dangerous lack of clarity as the law stands.
